The name “Vale da Lua” comes from the resemblance of its rock formations to the surface of the moon. The polished, rounded shapes of the rocks and crater-like holes formed by water erosion create a surreal setting—perfect for unforgettable photos and spiritual contemplation.
Geological Curiosities: How the Landscape Was Formed
This striking landscape was sculpted over 1 billion years through geological processes involving the Paranoá and Traíras Groups, which were originally sedimentary rocks that later underwent metamorphism. The erosion caused by the flow of the São Miguel River, combined with rock fragments spinning in whirlpools, slowly carved the so-called “rock pots” or “giant’s kettles”, giving the area its signature look.
A layer of calcite within the rocks makes them more susceptible to dissolution, accelerating the creation of natural pools and holes—shapes that resemble lunar craters and tunnels.

Where is Vale da Lua and How to Get There?
Vale da Lua is located 9 km from the village of São Jorge and 35 km from Alto Paraíso de Goiás, the two main towns that serve as gateways to Chapada dos Veadeiros.

Access is via the GO-239 highway with a short 4 km dirt road leading to the entrance.

From the parking lot, the trail to the attraction is just 1 km and takes about 15 minutes on foot.
There is no public transport to the site, so visitors should either rent a car, book a tour, or hitchhike, which is relatively common in the area.
Is the Trail Easy?
Yes! The trail to Vale da Lua is considered easy and short, making it perfect for families and casual hikers. However, during the rainy season, the rocks can get very slippery, and flash floods can occur. Safety signs and ropes mark the accessible areas.
Always respect safety guidelines and avoid exploring restricted zones.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
The dry season (May to October) is the best time to visit Vale da Lua:
